July 1998: We choose the Rotax 914, will tell you more later.
Which engine to choose?
BMW R1100RS (100hp)
Our favourite engine.
More than 50,000 are produced every year.
It's inexpensive, light, powerful and very reliable.
Best of all: fuel consumption 6 - 7 ltr unleaded at 75%.
It compensates automatically for altitude and Europa hopes to offer dual ignition
and a vacuum pump on the package.
But....will it work ???

Other good options:
Rotax
The Rotax engines are the standard engines for the Europa.
A lot of 912's are flying all over the world, the 914 is relatively new.
Very good engines but also very expensive.
Rotax 912 (80hp)
Rotax 912S (100hp)
Rotax 914 (Turbo) (115hp)

NSI Subaru
The Subaru engines are real beauties, well engineered and powerful.
They are a bit heavy but MTOW compensation for the Europa/Subaru combination
is on its way. We saw one in take-off at Cranfield and it really points its
nose into the sky, the rate of climb must be incredible.
Subaru EA81-100 (100hp)
Subaru EA81-140T (Turbo) (140hp)
I could not resist to place a picture of two Europa/Subaru combinations, the
cowlings are stunning!
Jabiru 2200
The Jabiru 2200 (80hp) is a very nice, small and simple engine (no gear box,
no radiators, no water-pipes and fittings).

If you look at it you instantly fall in love with this engine.
It sounds very nice and flies very good (in the Jabiru aeroplane that is).
The main advantage of this engine is its weight, 50 lbs (...) less than
a Rotax 912. If you're planning to fit the glider wings on your
Europa, this is probably the engine for you.

Mid West
The Mid West Wankel rotary engines are very light and powerful.
They are quite expensive but also fully certificated to JAR 22 and JAR-E.
Probably the best engine if you look at horsepower/weight ratio.
This is a picture of the Europa demonstrator G-KITS with the engine built-in.

Wilksch Diesel
The Wilksch CITEC "WAM-120" diesel engine is very close to testing in a Europa.
